Spirit week or Spirit-less week, it is up to you to decide

Spirit Week. To some, it is a week of endless fun and excitement. To others, like me, its pretty much just like another week. Here at Palmer we have spirit weeks every month or so. During that week, students are encouraged to show their school spirit by acting in a certain way or wearing certain things. But I don't really get what doing all these crazy random activities have to do with school spirit. If you really want to show your school spirit, support your school's teams by going to work their games every once and a while. Now I'm not saying that spirit week is pointless. It is a fun week where people can do crazy and ridiculous things without looking like an idiot. I mean if somebody on a normal day decided to wear pyjamas to school or wear their clothes inside-out, they would look pretty silly. Spirit week would be better if more people participated in it. Judging from my previous spirit week experiences, I would say that about less than half the students actually participate in it. This could be for a couple of different reasons. People might be lazy and just choose not to participate in spirit week. Some people may be too shy and not be comfortable with doing the events or things planned on spirit week. I pretty sure that it is not because they forgot because a week or so before spirit week, almost everyday on the PA, people from student council talk about it. As for the PA announcements, I feel that although they are randomly fooling around, it gets people into the mood of things. However, I'm guessing that's not working too well, considering the number of people participating in spirit week. As for the events during spirit week, although some events are fun to do, some of them don't make much sense. For example, near the end of December, there was BYOB (Bring your own banana) day. Now, I don't really get how bringing a banana to school has anything to do with anything. Anyways, some people may already always bring bananas to school, so it will just be another normal day for them. I'm not saying these ideas are bad, I'm just saying that I don't get some of the events. Anyways, I think it is pretty hard for student council to come up with really good and exciting ideas every time. They are already trying their hardest, it is just that the students don't choose to participate. As for how spirit week is good for the school community, it can bring people together while making a school fun. However, since only about half of the school participates, that concept won't work too well. Spirit weeks are fun, but if no one decides to participate in it, it may as well be called a spirit-less week.

  1. Actually, about what you said about the PA announcements, the majority of the time, I DO forget, even though they are announced every single day. Many of us listen to the announcements after silent reading, but after the school day is over and all of our duties are completed, we tend to forget about the announcements until the next day at silent reading. Often, we only remember the announcements for what meetings we need to attend that day at lunchtime or afterschool. I don't know about you, but I personally don't go home and recite everything that was on the announcements to myself before bedtime. So forgetting IS a pretty big factor.

And to everyone who's mentioning BYOB Day.. just to let you know, it's not an event that ONLY occurs at or was created at Palmer. Many schools have BYOB Day. I'm not exactly sure why either, maybe it's an old tradition. However, I think it's unfair to point out that the Palmer Student Council comes up with "weird" ideas just because we have BYOB Day.

  2. You know once something like that appears, I'm pretty sure it's time for Student Council to find something better to do with their time.

  3. Personally speaking, I would rather the student council to be changed into shadow council than to participate in random spirit weeks. Reason:

    1.No time.
    2.No energy.
    3.No brain cells

I still have to create 3 mega electromagnets for science fair. Research=12% complete; proposal:100%; Report: 1%

  4. Some people I know simply don't pay attention to the announcements at all or they hear it and immediately forget what they heard.

  5. For the annoucement thing, i do admit that it is a problem. However, if you were at school on the Monday of the spirit week, after seeing people doing the events and seeing the events at the lounge, if you actually wanted to participate you would the following day (unless you memeory sucks). People forgetting is not the main problem why people don't participate. If it is, either people at Palmer need to pay more attention to the annoucements or they have really bad memories.

  6. Actually I thinks that the Spirit Weeks should be compressed down into something HUGE on one day.

  7. If we do, it'll be the most crazy, loud, hyper,....(you get the point) day ever. It will be like the pep rally, except that it lasts the whole day and is 10 times louder and more crazy. And as you know, the pep rally is already VERY loud and crazy. Good luck being deaf afterwards.

  8. Pep relly is not spirit week...it is an event at which people can show off how good they are at making noises.

  9. Or maybe people just don't do spirit days because we have dignity. And how does making a complete fool of yourself have to do with school spirit? Like the author said, go to a few games, or watch the Footloose competition...shouldn't the student council be doing something more useful with their time?
